What are sleep disorders?

Sleep disorders are a group of conditions that disrupt your sleep, affecting the quality and amount of sleep you get each night. We need to get adequate amounts of REM & deep sleep in order to allow our bodies to rest & regenerate, decrease inflammation and remove toxins that are inevitably accumulated in our body throughout the day. This is when the glymphatic system is activated.

The most common sleep disorders include:

Insomnia

Insomnia, the most common sleep condition, occurs if you have difficulty falling asleep, can’t stay asleep for the entire night, or wake up too early and can’t get back to sleep.

Sleep apnea

People with sleep apnea temporarily stop breathing throughout the night when their tongue and soft tissues cover the airway. You can stop breathing 5-30 times or more every hour. The most common symptom of sleep apnea is loud snoring. This is a serious condition as it prevents you from getting adequate amounts of oxygen to your brain.

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder affecting the brain’s ability to control your sleep-wake cycle. As a result, you experience extreme daytime drowsiness and suddenly fall asleep, even if you’re in the middle of driving, talking, or eating.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS)

RLS causes an uncontrollable urge to move your legs, usually because you develop uncomfortable leg sensations.

What symptoms do sleep disorders cause?

In addition to jerking leg movements and nodding off to sleep during the day, sleep disorders may cause any of the following:

  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Morning headaches
  • Irritability and hyperactivity
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory loss
  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

What health problems occur due to sleep disorders?

Adults need 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. If your sleep is interrupted, you don’t cycle through all the sleep stages.

During each stage, your body and brain perform different restorative tasks, such as:

  • Storing memories
  • Clearing away brain wastes and toxins
  • Building bones and muscles
  • Processing emotional information
  • Repairing and regenerating tissues
  • Strengthening the immune system

The task stops if the stage is disrupted, leading to emotional, cognitive, and physical health problems. Sleep disorders lead to high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, heart conditions,  obesity, other metabolic conditions and mental health conditions.

How are sleep disorders managed?

Most sleep disorders respond well to natural therapies that improve your sleep environment and support your body’s ability to restore its natural sleep-wake cycle. Dr. Noosha may teach you new sleep habits and recommend any of the following:

  • Light therapy
  • Supplements (like Magnesium, GABA, melatonin – after identifying YOUR root cause and the correct dose for you)
  • Dietary changes
  • Medication management
  • Herbal medicine
  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Stress management
  • Regular exercise
  • Meditation and relaxation techniques
